SEX DRUGS & ROBOTS

Interesting structure to this one, which may be why it has always stood out to me. Being a song that's driven primarily by bass, pedal steel and piano, it's also not easy to recreate a "presence," I suppose, that's comparable to the recording -- especially if you're just working with the 'ol acoustic by the computer desk.

That said, it presents a nice opportunity to add your own feel: strumming, picking, a mix of both, bar chords vs. the first three frets, etc. Here is the basic chord structure:

Progression 1: Intro + "20/20 Vision to see..."

C#m > F# > C#m

Notes: That C#m (throughout the song) is technically (probably) something like a G#/C#m. That is, a C#m except with the bass of G# (so bar the entire 4th fret). You'll definitely want to incorporate that alternating bass note if you plan on mimicking Guto's bass line to some extent with your chords. Also, in case there are questions about timing: the F# coincides with "20/20..." being sung, then going back to C#m as "...vision" is sung.

Progression 2: "I ... can ... see."

A > B > E

Notes: Timing is simple here: Three separate words for three separate chords. The E at the end here is shared with the E that starts out the next progression.

Progression 3: "Tell me ... what was it ... like."

E ... D#m ... C#m

Progression 4: "when you ... switched off the ... lights."

C#m ... B ... A

Notes: For those that don't bar A on the 2nd fret, you can pull/hammer/etc. your ring finger to toy with Esus/Aadd9 which helps get a bit closer to the feel of the recording.

Progression 5: "Went to ... bed before ... midnight --- failed to ... find you at ... home that night."

A ... G#m ... F#m --- A ... G#m ... F#m

Progression 6: "So finally ... It's got to be ... Down, down to me."

C#m ... F# ... E

Progression 7: "Living ... ninety- ... four "

E ... D#m ... C#m

Progression 8: "When me and ... you were at ... war."

C#m ... B ... A

Progression 9: "Was born a ... baby that ... didn't cry --- I programmed ... robots to ... make them lie"

A ... G#m ... F#m --- A ... G#m ... F#m

Progression 10: [No lyrics -- chord transition back to 2nd round of "20/20 vision to see..."]

E ... (Guto's little bass riff) .... G#m ... B ... C#m

Progression 11: [Back to the beginning]

Repeat 1-6 (although 1 is shortened this time, of course)

Progression 12: Outro -- "If tears could kill, I'd be a ... long time ... gone."

C#m ... F# ... B
-----------------------

That should do it (or get you/us pretty darn close at the very least). There's a chord or two in there that I'm not supremely confident in (the harmonies in this song can kind of mask what's really going on underneath, I think), but, overall, I think it's fairly accurate.

All apologies in advance for the way I've charted it out -- not a strong point for me. Let me know how it goes, and if I can help anyone make sense of what I wrote up there. Cheers!
