Big Names Confirmed For Free Liverpool Gigs

by Vicky Roberts on 9/8/2004

Super Furry Animals, Starsailor, Travis and Embrace are amongst artists who’ll play for free in Liverpool next month for BBC Radio 2's Live shows broadcast from the city.

Donny Osmond, Amy Winehouse, Ed Harcourt, Beverley Knight, Beth Nielsen Chapham, Ian Broudie, Ian McNabb and the Kings of Convenience will also take part in the free event.

Lesley Douglas, Controller of Radio 2, said: "I'm delighted that Radio 2's annual week of live music is taking place in Liverpool this year.

"The city, with its worldwide reputation for establishing and nurturing musical talent and legendary venues, is the perfect setting for the range of programmes and artists involved in Radio 2 Live in Liverpool."

The gigs will give fans of Travis their first opportunity to see the band since frontman Fran Healy’s illness earlier in the year. The band were forced to cancel six dates scheduled in Japan.

The dates and venues for all the gigs have not yet been confirmed.

GLC JOIN SFA - 27/08/2004

GOLDIE LOOKIN’ CHAIN snubbed THE DARKNESS to go onstage with their old pals SUPER FURRY ANIMALS at the READING leg of the CARLING WEEKEND tonight (August 27).

The collective joined the band for a run through ’Motherfokker’, the track they released as a download-only earlier this year.

The Furries, playing before a packed tent, also brought on the yetis for set closer ’The Man Don’t Give A Fuck’, having killed them off earlier this year at London Hammersmith Apollo. But singer Gruff Rhys had told NME.COM earlier: “It’s like Jesus, a resurrection.”

The SFA set was:

’Slow Life’ ’(Drawing) Rings Around The World’ ’Golden Retriever’ ’Do Or Die’ ’Run, Christian, Run!’ ’Juxtapozed With U’ ’The International Language Of Screaming’ ’Motherfokker’ ’The Man Don’t Give A Fuck’
